How to Choose a Gourd

For thickness...at least 1/4 " shell.
Some 1/8" gourds if, hard, will work.
Knock on the gourd.  It should sound like a board and not a piece of cardboard.
Free of little or no insect bites.  Some artist like the markings made by insects.  For me these give the gourd a rustic look.
There are no perfect gourds. Maybe close.
Remember gourds are not identical  For each type, there are a variety of shapes.
Height, long, round, short, squatty, width, wide. Neck of gourds are slender, wide, straight, curved
Bird House comes in all shapes and sizes.  Do you want a long tall neck that is slender or wide  or a squatty gourd? Martins like gourds with a large body such as a bushel and or large kettle, or martin gourd.
Wrens like gourds with a smaller body.  Almost any gourd will work if it is the right size.
When you order gourds by mail, make sure you tell the seller you do not want paper thin gourds or cardboard like quality gourds.
